When the ability to buy extra slots came out, I already had a Ranger, Warrior, Monk, & Elementalist. I was doing a lot of in-game selling at that time, but I didn't like carrying all that stuff around on my Ele, and I didn't want to delete any character. So I bought a slot and created a new charater - a female Mesmer - just for storage/selling. However, I enjoyed playing the Mesmer so much, I went back to using the Ele for storage.
Now, after buying the new chapters and with an extra slot for pre-ordering NF, I have 10 character slots - one for each class.
Quaker Tu - Ranger
Keridwen of Woods - Warrior
Quaker Doc - Monk - if I played Monk more often, I'd probably restart this one because I don't like the name any more.
John of Woods - Elementalist
Miranda Tu - Mesmer - I saw the film Serenity and became a fan of Firefly.
Malika Tu - Assassin - I made the name Malika up, but it turns out it really exists.
Katharin of Woods - Necro - no special reason for name.
Inara Tu - Dervish - Firefly again.
Tendaji Tu - Paragon - I wanted something that would go with the theme of NF. Tendaji is Swahili for something - I forget what.
Storage Tu - Ritualist - he is just Level 2, parked in the Guild Hall, and as the name suggests is just a storage mule.

Raziel I just grabbed from Soulreaver, dunno why. Selisuur was a randomly generated last name in Neverwinter Nights. I added a second U to his name because the original was already taken by the one at Digital Ops.

First character: Warrior, Vermilion Knight, from Slipknot's Vermilion. (Still like the name although don't like Slipknot as much as I used to xD)
Second character: Monk, Pimp N Heal, random. (don't really like the name, I just made him fast and he is just my 55 farmer)
Third character: Ranger, Mrs Big Shot, I made 3 rangers before her, and deleted, finally found this name, best ranger name ever.

Fourth character: Elementalist, Libertine Black, took some time to make, used some dictionaries, lol.
My PvP characters have funny names since I delete them every day :P

My names have no overt references per se, but rather follow Tomino's sort of unusual phonetic and semantic combinations a la names like South Burning etc. I love Gundam names.

Naming a character is kinda important, since you see it everytime you play the game. People call you that name ingame (even if they know your real life name). Your character even has its own birthday, with a gift etc.. so it's normal to get attached to the name I guess.

When I first started the game I didn't really think that much about giving a meaningful name. But it soon changed when there was a hiatus between factions and NF. Where I deleted and created characters to try out other professions.

On this note:
I want to change the name of my main character. But since I've done alot with him I cannot bear to delete him and make a new one. So I'm hoping for this update....

I named my Ranger Mat Cauthorn, after a cahracter from Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series (had to modify the last name, the real one was taken). His pet is a spider, which I named Moghedien

I also have a necro which I named after a minor character from the same series. My monk is TI Eightythreeplus, namd after a calculator, my PvP char is named after a slang word for where I live "Nash Vegas". All my other chars are just random names.

i always use the name, "voltar," because one day i was talking to a friend about, "candide," and for some reason said, "voltar," instead of, "voltaire." i used that name for the, "bad guy," in a social-complaint cantata i wrote and started playing games with that name (coincidentally also portuguese for, come back," which really is completely irrelevant). for gw i made it, "vol tar," since you need 2 names.

a friend was describing the brute sword as a, "biscuit splitter," since the phrase, "butter knife," was escaping him so i named my necro that (and not the sexual inuendo you'd expect from that name). um...i've used a lot of strongbad email references (modestly hot girl, garble dina, a splode). and things that sound funny to me (punch the munchkin, value shopper, eatemup pancakes, ima smychoo). i work in mental health and unfortunately, the newer antipsychotic drug names were taken (zy prexa and geo don) so i called her cloza ril (last resort antipsychotic...might be kinda funny for those in the field...oh, i guess i tried hal dol first too. that's some old stuff).

also since the profanity filter wouldn't allow the gay in, "gloria gaynor," (who sang, "i will survive,") for my survivor i just named her, "smoker chick," for the minimal amount of irony i could get out of it.

with 3 accounts and a few extra slots on the main one, i've had to go outside my usual set of names.

My first char: Neko X

Normally when I play a game I name my character NekoZ (who would of thought) but once I started up GW and realized I needed 2 words I was in quite a conundrum. So I got anxious, dropped the Z, added an X, and have been annoyed with that name ever since. The others are just random with "Neko" in the name. (When I first came up with NekoZ, it was me just randomly selecting words untill I combined a name I really liked. I had no idea 'Neko' meant cat and I hate it for that reason lol.)

My Ele, or, my first charactor holds my real-life name. Because i've always wanted to yeild the power of fire at my finger tips.

I've always liked the name Jill. So, I came up with a create last name for her. My Ranger; Jill Jzire.

I took Shakespeare in high school. The play, Twelfth Night, gave me the insperation I needed for my Dervish. Cesario, one of the primary charactors. Ironic, tho, Cesario was both a Womens', and a Mans' name. Cesario Rose, my Dervish.

I've always liked the name Otto. So as my new factions charactor, I wanted somethign that sounded Asian, so there you have it. my Monk: Otto Otaski.

Some charactors I don't really play.

My Paragon, unfinished as he is, he's still there. A normal name based around a name from my childhood. Ever read the book Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh? One of my faves of all time. I loved the last name, Frisby. But I didn't want to totally rip off the name. So, John Frisby, my Paragon.

My unfinished Warrior, named after one of the charactors from Fururama. Zap. So, my warrior, Zap Brannington.

So, there you have it. I like to think I have came up with some create names for my chars.

I named my black dervish Heartwood, since it's dark, old, and resilient. Named my ranger Featherfoot for obvious reasons. My ritualist is Spiritlistener, I think it's cool with characters that don't seem to have an immediate "power", like oracles and seers and such, instead of lightningthrowing mages and demon summoners.

As for their additional names, I just go with something short and simple, something that's easy to call me by. Jo, Io, To, etc.

My "can't think of a name"-alts are named Mr Pokes the paragon, Cheesy Fantasy Name the assassin, and Plusplus Hp the monk.

I picked a fictional character I liked, who my wife liked even better.

One of her characters was named after his wife.

In fact, she just posted here under that name.

That's Francis Crawford. For my necro, I pushed copyright bounds and named him closely after a character from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Wesley Wyndham-Price.)

I just started a third character, the first female one I'm actually playing. So I picked the most androgynous name I could think of for a fighting RPG character -- Revan, a character from Knights of the Old Republic who can be male or female depending on a player choice. And "Bladesinger" just sounded cool for a surname.

Oh, a couple of female characters I ultimately decided just to keep as mules have names that are variants on "Morgan le Fay". And I also have mules just named "Disposable Dude" and "Disposable Chick".
